How to use the Skills gap analyser correctly
The skills-gap analyser compares your current evidence with recurring requirements from real target roles. Use it to set achievable learning priorities for a career change, promotion, or development plan—not to label yourself unqualified from one vacancy.
Before you start
Collect three to five comparable vacancies and extract repeated skills. List your own skills with level and evidence. Keep tools, technical methods, behavioural capabilities, and responsibilities in separate categories.
- One target role or vacancy family rather than unrelated occupations.
- Current skills supported by projects, work, assessment, or study evidence.
- Required skills collected from several current vacancies and a realistic learning window.
How to use it
- Normalise the skill names from several target vacancies and remove obvious duplicates.
- Map current evidence to each requirement, distinguishing exact, near, and unsupported matches.
- Rank gaps by vacancy frequency, importance, learning effort, and available proof opportunity.
- Choose one development project and define how a reviewer will assess it.
Example and interpretation
SQL, Power BI, and data cleaning recur across several analyst vacancies. The candidate prioritises SQL fundamentals, uses a public dataset for one project, and then presents the results in Power BI instead of starting five unrelated courses.
An unmatched label is not automatically a true capability gap; wording may differ. Prioritise gaps that recur across credible vacancies and can be tested through a realistic piece of evidence.
Limits
Text comparison cannot measure depth, project quality, or market competition. Tools change quickly, while domain knowledge and problem-solving remain important. Validate the priorities with practitioners and completed work.
Privacy: The skills-gap analyser does not need identity numbers, passwords, bank details, medical records, private referee data, or confidential employer material. Replace names and restricted figures with neutral examples wherever possible.
